And they both registered correspondent accounts for Absolut Bank in Tbilisi, Georgia, which was majority owned by U.S. investment companies. They did the same with Avtobank in Moscow, whose shareholders included the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, two Cyprus entities—Regent Pacific Nominees and Danon Holding Ltd.—and Drumland Investments Limited, which had no discernible home. The Bank of New York had inherited a dozen correspondent accounts through its takeover of Irving Trust. These included accounts in banks in Warsaw, Budapest, Moscow, Sofia, Prague, and Frankfurt, Germany. The first account had been opened in 1921 with the Bank Handlowy in Warsaw. It was a long time before the next East/West correspondent relationship took place. Twenty-eight years after the first, in 1947, a correspondent account was established with the Soviet Narodny bank in Warsaw. In the 1960s, five more banks were added, three more in the following decade, and one in the 1980s. Over the course of the 1990s, The Bank of New York’s inherited correspondent accounts dwindled by a third.
