Inside this Book – The landscape of gender and education has become quite complex. Where educationalists once focused, rightly, on the massive inequalities for girls in schools, the focus now has turned to boys. Because boys and masculinities have become such pervasive topics, addressed by hard-line boy advocates and feminist educationalists alike, one can best describe the current state of the debates as a “boy turn.” 1 At present, scholars and educators in numerous countries are working hard to answer the frequent, often conservative or antifeminist question, “what about the boys?” and funding pours in globally in ways boy advocates of a decade ago could have only dreamed. In Australia alone, as I document later, millions of dollars have been granted to both theory- and practice-oriented boyswork. 2 Most programs for girls are not faring nearly so well. Let us not overstate, though. No movement is totalizing or monolithic, facing no resistance. Girls’ education debates never were, and even for all the patriarchal force behind it, the boy turn isn’t. Still, for those on the bottom looking up, it surely seems daunting.
