Inside this Book – It is generally accepted that anions from the electrolyte are incorporated into passive films during passivation [l]. Recent results obtained on an Fe25Cr alloy in acid solutions with varying chloride content showed that chloride incorporation during film formation depends on the chloride concentration of the passivation solution. Exposure of the passivated alloy to a chloride solution indicated that the pit initiation time decreases with increasing chloride content of the passive film [21. In order to better understand the mechanism by which some alloying elements enhance the pitting potential of iron-chromium alloys, passive films on Fe-Cr-X alloys (X = Mo, V, Si) were formed in &id sulphate solutions in presence and absence of chloride. The films were analysed by AES and XI’S in order to study the influence of ternary alloying elements on the chloride content of the passive films.
